Abuja, July 4, 2024 – In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s energy sector, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) of Nigeria and Havenhill Synergy Limited recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic partnership aims to deploy up to 250MW of decentralized renewable energy (DRE) projects, advancing the Federal Government’s goals for energy access, transition, and security.

Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of REA, highlighted the significance of this MoU: “This is a landmark event under the DARES programme and the introduction of the Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) model. The RESCO model aims to provide developers with a platform to become utility companies where they can be able to  attract investment to deploy mini grids. These developers have the capacity and track record to not only deliver mini grids but to manage large portfolios of projects as well as scale up. This MoU demonstrates our commitment to roll-out this RESCOs model. This MoU gives developers the opportunity to partner with REA to build mini grids under the DARES programme and become RESCOs. We look forward to this mutually beneficial partnership.”

With this collaboration, Havenhill will be deploying and operating up to 250MW DRE projects including interconnected mini-grids (IMGs), isolated mini-grids, commercial and industrial (C&I) solutions and agricultural solutions across rural and peri-urban areas. Beneficiaries of these projects include markets, businesses, households, public institutions, healthcare facilities, schools and more.

Olusegun Odunaiya, the CEO of Havenhill Synergy, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Electricity is the backbone of our infrastructure, and Havenhill is committed to this cause. With our track record in the energy access space and footprints in the Commercial & Industrial Sector and other utility scale-up initiatives, we will collaborate effectively with REA to fulfill this mandate and make Nigeria a better place to live in,” Odunaiya stated.

Four other companies executed similar MoUs, aiming for a combined 1,265 MW capacity of DRE projects. The partnership is set to also introduce new energy service models, including Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), and promote the adoption of energy-efficient appliances and PUE devices through sales, distribution, and credit financing. It will also offer value-added services such as e-mobility, agricultural processing, cold storage, and e-cooking.
