Running a fashion business in Nigeria is not for the faint-hearted, especially when unreliable electricity threatens your creativity, deadlines, and income. “I remember there was a time there wasn’t power supply for about a week and I had to work just four hours every day, trying to manage costs on fuel,” Olwatoyin recalls. “It really affected business, I could not meet up with demand, I had to start apologising to clients because their clothes weren’t ready.”

The only constraint was thinking I might have to spend a lot. But it turned out I’m saving much more than I thought. With consistent power, Oluwatoyin finally realised her dream of running a summer class for children aged 10 to 16. “Before now, I wanted that consistency of light, but I wasn’t getting it.
