Inspired by Solar: Reliable Electricity Bolsters Local Vendor into New Venture

The Challenges of Unreliable Power

For nearly five years, Mr Idris has operated a POS business and a small clothing sales ship in Gbabe Comunity, Kwara, Nigeria. A year ago, he ventured into water sales, using a borehole to pump and distribute water to local residents. However, with no access to the national grid, he relied on a generator, to keep his operations running The cost of fuel and frequent generator repairs made the business costly.

The installation of a solar mini-grid in Gbabe brought a solution for Idris and the entire community. With a reliable power supply, he was able to reduce his dependence on fuel, significantly lowering his operating costs and eliminating the constant maintenance that his generator required.

“It helps me in terms of savings. The electricity is helping, and we are really enjoying it,” Idris shared, noting that the solar power has dramatically improved his day-to-day operations and business profitability.

The benefits of reliable electricity extend beyond individual businesses. Gbabe is lit up at night, with illuminated streets and a vibrant atmosphere. “If you come to Gbabe, you’d think you’re in Banana Island; everywhere is bright, and there are different types of music,” Idris said with a smile, comparing the transformation to one of Nigeria’s upscale neighbourhoods.

Encouraged by this positive change, Idris is already planning his next business venture – a new electronics store. Currently, residents travel to neighbouring towns for their electronic needs, and Idris sees a golden opportunity to meet this demand locally With a reliable power supply supporting this new business idea, he is optimistic about the store’s potential success and the added convenience it will bring to the community.
