Empowering Entrepreneurs: How Kofeogun Fish Seller Doubled Income with Solar

In Kofeogun, a rural community located within Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State, Ms. Adeiran’s business has grown significantly thanks to recent advancements in energy access. Like many small-scale entrepreneurs in the community, Adediran’s life has seen significant improvement. For years, Adediran diligently operated her fish vending business, facing the challenges of unreliable electricity and the constant threat of fish spoilage.

Her business transformation began with the completion of the 16kW solar hybrid mini-grid in 2022 by Havenhill Synergy, a project that brought stable electricity to her community. Through Havenhill Synergy’s Appliance Finance Scheme, Adediran seized the opportunity to acquire a 300-litre chest freezer, which subsequently improved her business.

“Overconfidence dey worry me,” she happily quips in pidgin English, highlighting the newfound assurance brought about by stable electricity. “Before, I would ice my fish using buckets and cardboard,” Adediran explains, reflecting on the cumbersome process she used to endure. “But now, with my freezer, I can store large quantities of fish without any worry. The stress is gone.”

The impact of this upgrade has been profound. With more confidence in preserving fish, Adediran can now purchase and store up to ten cartons at a time, knowing that they will stay fresh until sold. “If I buy 10 cartoons now, I will sell everything at most in 3 days,” says Adediran. The stability of the electricity supply and the convenience of the freezer have not only eliminated the risk of spoilage but have also accelerated the pace of her sales. Her income has seen a considerable increase, marking a tangible impact on both her business and personal well-being.
