“Before the light came, we used to spend ₦5,000 or more on fuel.” Ridwan Ayomide remembers those days quite clearly. For three years, the buzzing sound of a small generator was a common sound in his barbershop in Ahoro Dada. It was unreliable, expensive, and exhausting. Like many rural entrepreneurs, he relied on fuel to keep his business afloat, even when it cut deeply into his profits.
“We would spend ₦5,000 or more on fuel, and still the light could go off anytime,” he recalls. It wasn’t just money lost but also hours of work, customers, and opportunity disappearing into the noise of a generator that could only do so much.
But everything changed when solar electricity came to the Ahoro Dada community.

A New Beginning Powered by the Sun
With the switch to clean energy, Ridwan’s expenses dropped drastically. “Now, we can make a recharge of ₦2,000 and use it for a week,” he says with a smile that tells the story before the words do. No more waking up early to buy fuel. No more shutting the shop when the generator breaks down. No more choosing between profit and power.
Solar electricity didn’t just replace his generator; it expanded his dreams.

“Before, I wasn’t using this type of clipper,” he says proudly, lifting one of his new professional clippers. With stable electricity, he upgraded his tools and now owns four clippers – something he never imagined during the generator days. More tools meant more customers. More customers meant more income. And more income meant dignity, stability, and a sense of hope.
A Shop Transformed, A Community Empowered
“Before, my shop did not look like this, but now I feel good about my shop,” Ridwan says, looking around the bright, clean space he has been able to improve. The steady hum of his clippers now replaces the chaotic noise of a fuel-powered generator. Customers sit comfortably, knowing their barber won’t have to stop mid-haircut due to a power outage.
The difference is visible, and it is not just in his shop but in his confidence.
Ridwan is no longer a businessman struggling to survive unreliable power. He is an entrepreneur thriving because the right kind of energy unlocked his potential.
The Bigger Picture: What Reliable Power Really Means
Ridwan’s experience mirrors the reality of many rural communities across Nigeria. For years, the absence of stable electricity has held back small businesses, stifled creativity, and limited economic growth. A simple haircut, a cold drink, a classroom lesson, a clinic visit – all depend on power.

Solar is changing that story. By providing reliable and affordable electricity, renewable energy is bridging the energy access gap and giving rural entrepreneurs like Ridwan the chance to compete, grow, and innovate. It reduces energy costs, eliminates dependence on fuel, and creates an enabling environment for businesses to flourish.
Ridwan puts it simply: “This solar electricity has done a lot for us in Ahoro Dada. I thank God.”
His story is proof that when light enters a community – steady, clean, and dependable – progress follows.
