What is Decentralized Energy?

The current power system in Nigeria is a centralised system where electricity is generated from large power plants that are located away from end users, connected to a network of high-voltage transmission lines and distributed through the electric power grid.

So, what is decentralised energy?

Decentralised energy is energy that is generated off the main grid, and produced close to where it will be used. Decentralised energy generation involves using a variety of smaller power generation and storage units that can be grid connected to provide power supply.

Advantages of Decentralised Energy

Some advantages of decentralised energy systems are:

1. There is a reduction in transmission losses thereby making the system more efficient than centralised energy systems.

2. They help to reduce carbon emissions. Most DE systems are powered by renewable sources.

3. It helps improve the quality of power from the #electricity grid.

4. They are more reliable and less vulnerable than centralised #energy systems. E.g. Mini-grids.

5. They are currently the fastest way of improving energy access to off-grid communities.
