Solar Power Brings Job Creation and New Opportunities to Gbabe Community

Haruna Abdullahi’s life took a remarkable turn when he transitioned from farming to becoming the mini-grid operator in Gbabe, a community in Kwara State, where Havenhill Synergy deployed a 25kW solar mini-grid. Before the arrival of the solar mini-grid, Haruna struggled with financial instability and a lack of job opportunities.

He recalls the hardships he faced, saying, “I used to suffer; there was no money for me, and finding a job was hard.”

However, everything changed when Havenhill Synergy provided training and a chance to become the operator of the new mini-grid. Haruna, who had always dreamed of becoming an engineer, took the opportunity and never looked back.

“As I became the operator for the site, everything is good now. Even my body has changed,” Haruna says with a smile.

Through his role as a mini-grid operator, Haruna now enjoys a stable income, which has greatly improved his life. He credits his new job for not only changing his financial situation but also inspiring him to pursue further education in engineering.

“If I am able to go to school, it will help improve my performance in the power house,” Haruna shares, expressing his ambition to one day become an engineer and contribute even more to his community’s development.

Haruna’s story highlights the powerful impact of renewable energy in rural Nigeria. The introduction of the solar mini-grid not only provided reliable electricity to Gbabe but also created meaningful employment, changing Haruna’s life and offering new opportunities for growth. With his newfound hope, Haruna is now not just dreaming of a better future, but actively working towards it.
